Structure and hemodynamics.
Vascular ultrasonography uses reflected sound to depict vascular structures. Doppler methods assess frequency shifts associated with moving blood cells and provide information related to blood-flow characteristics. Color-flow visualization and spectral Doppler analysis offer complementary information.
In appropriate extracranial applications, carotid assessment may combine gray-scale vessel imaging, color flow and spectral measurements. Velocity interpretation depends on acquisition technique, Doppler angle, the vessel examined, validated criteria and the broader clinical setting. A displayed velocity does not independently establish a diagnosis.
Clinically appropriate development.
Potential development may encompass suitable carotid vascular assessment and related hemodynamic applications within an appropriately established technical and clinical framework. Specific modalities, personnel, protocols and interpretation arrangements have not been verified for operational publication.
